Dr. Polk has been awarded four fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation, a Guggenheim fellowship and a Ford Foundation fellowship; during his service in the U.S. Department of State, he received a commendation from the U.S. Department of Defense; he also received the Medal of Honor from the Kingdom of Afghanistan and an honorary degree from Lake Forest College.
